Also Announces Brownfield Grants for ChemDesign and Hometown Square.

Governor Jim Doyle today announced $19.15 million for Marinette to rebuild its drinking water system.

Governor Doyle also announced $450,000 to help ChemDesign purchase and remediate its company site, and $190,000 in state assistance for Hometown Square to redevelop retail space.

“Marinette is receiving one of the largest clean drinking water awards in the entire state, and I am really happy to move forward this project,” Governor Doyle said. “This project shows what the Recovery Act is all about – not only are we putting people to work, but we are also making major, long-term investments in Wisconsin’s communities.”

Governor Doyle is providing funding for the project through a $9.7 million low-interest loan from the State Drinking Water Loan Program, while $9.4 million in funds is from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Recovery Act funding for Marinette is part of $37 million the state is receiving for its drinking water loan program, doubling the state’s annual average funding.

The City of Marinette will use the funding to construct a new water treatment plant using the most modern filtration and treatment technologies. The city will also renovate its main water line including its pipeline bringing in water from Green Bay.

Through the Recovery Act drinking water funds, Wisconsin is making investments to reduce the state’s environmental impact and make infrastructure more efficient. Wisconsin is exceeding federal standards by investing over 30 percent of the state’s Recovery Act drinking water funds in green infrastructure that improves energy efficiency and reduces water usage.

The Marinette water grant builds on the Governor’s efforts to position Wisconsin for future growth. Since taking office in 2003, Governor Doyle has worked aggressively to create and retain jobs in Wisconsin.  Governor Doyle’s budget last year created some of the strongest economic development tools in the nation to help businesses create jobs and get people back to work.  Wisconsin now has powerful new tax credits to help manufacturers create and retain jobs, new tools to help investors create start-ups, and new incentives to spur research and development.

Governor Doyle is using the Recovery Act, new state tools, and existing state programs to help companies across the state create and retain jobs. Today, the Governor also announced two grants from the state’s Brownfield Elimination and Brownfield Redevelopment (BEBR) Program to assist economic development efforts in Marinette.

ChemDesign will receive $450,000 in BEBR funding to help clean up its newly-purchased facility to meet high environmental standards. With this investment, ChemDesign will continue its leadership in high-end chemical manufacturing and retain 93 jobs in Marinette.

In addition, the Governor announced $190,000 in brownfield funds to Hometown Square to help clean up and develop six storefront retail spaces in a development that is expected to open in mid-March.
