Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the appointment of Rodney Capel to New York City Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.

“Rodney has a longstanding and impressive career in government, both on the local and national levels,” Governor Cuomo said. “His experience makes him particularly suited for this appointment. He will be a great addition to my administration as we work with elected officials from across the state towards a better New York.”

Most recently, Mr. Capel was Senior Vice President of Mercury LLC, where he provided strategic consulting and issues management for national, state and city corporations as well as not-for-profits.

Prior to joining Mercury LLC, Mr. Capel was Deputy Chief of Staff for New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn for two years.

From 2001 to 2006, he served as the Executive Director/Political Director of the New York State Democratic Committee. In addition, he worked for Senator Charles Schumer as his Deputy State Director from 1999 to 2001.

Mr. Capel also has experience on the national stage, serving as State Director for the New York for the Kerry/Edwards Presidential campaign in 2004 as well as the Gore/Lieberman 2000 Presidential campaign.

Mr. Capel serves on numerous civic organizations and boards including his service as Vice Chair for the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, a member of Joppa Lodge #55, PHA Affiliated and the Mid-Manhattan branch of the NAACP.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said, “I want to congratulate Governor Cuomo on making a wise selection in the appointment of Rodney Capel. At the Council, Rodney served as an important member of our team, working hard on all matters related to New York City’s State and Federal legislative issues. In the wake of the controversial Sean Bell shooting, Rodney led the Council’s efforts to improve police/community relations by organizing citywide clergy roundtables and community forums. He is a smart, capable, and dedicated public servant.”

Assemblyman Keith Wright said, “Rodney is one of the most intelligent young persons I’ve ever met. This is a natural progression of his successful career so far. He was born for public service and through his placement as New York City Director Intergovernmental Affairs for Andrew Cuomo, the people of New York state will benefit from his integrity and work ethic.”
