New Mexico Invests $1 Million For Early Childhood Programs
Governor Bill Richardson today announced the release of $1 million to support early childhood programs across New Mexico.
The federal stimulus money from the Government Services Fund will allow the Children, Youth and Families Department to support high-quality childcare for homeless children and home visits for at-risk families with infants across New Mexico.
“Investments in early childhood programs are an investment for a better New Mexico,” Governor Richardson said. “This award will help New Mexico families and children during a critical time.”
Of the $1 million, $234,000 will go to programs that serve homeless children and their families and $766,000 will go to home visiting services for infants and their families.
For the home visiting services, CYFD intends to restore budget cuts to contractors that have existing contracts with the state to serve at-risk families with infants.
The department will issue an RFP for the homeless childcare programs.
Governor Richardson was joined at today’s announcement in Albuquerque by officials from St. Joseph Community Health, which has committed $234,168 of its own funds to support early childhood programs.
The $234,000 from St. Joseph Community Health is in addition to the funds set aside by the state.
“I’m pleased that St. Joseph Community Health is working to support our common goal that every New Mexico child gets a safe and healthy start,” Governor Richardson said.
“Investments in early childhood programs are especially critical during the current economic downturn,” said Allen Sanchez, CEO of St. Joseph Community Health. “We’re pleased to support the state in its efforts to improve outcomes for New Mexico children and families.”
