Governor Attends Grand Opening to Support Tourism.

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell celebrated the opening of the new Governor’s Suite at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia Friday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Homestead, America’s most historic resort, has been an icon of hospitality since 1766.

The new Governor’s Suite was created as part of a $4 million renovation to mark the 80th anniversary of the resort’s Historic Tower section.

Tourism is one of Virginia’s most powerful industries, generating $19 billion in revenue, supporting 210,000 jobs and providing $1.2 billion in state and local taxes.

“The Homestead Resort is a great example of the economic importance of tourism,” said Governor McDonnell.  “This storied resort has employed thousands of people over the years and currently is the county’s largest employer.  I’m proud to have these new accommodations dedicated during my term and encourage Virginians to get out and travel the state and support our local tourism businesses.”

The new Governor’s Suite is close to 3,000 square feet and includes one bedroom, a parlor, bathroom and a 1,800 square foot exterior porch with views of the Allegheny Mountains and countryside.  The suite features historical books about the Commonwealth of Virginia and a historic map of the state. A commemorative plaque with a letter from Governor McDonnell, along with a picture of the First Family, is displayed on the wall outside of the Governor’s Suite.

“The Homestead is a special place that showcases the natural beauty and rich history of Virginia,” said Alisa Bailey, President and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation.  “The resort is one of the hundreds of destinations across Virginia where visitors can completely connect with loved ones on a memorable vacation.”

Love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation.  Travel deals and special offers for visitors and Virginians looking to travel the state are available at www.Virginia.org.
