Governor Culver today issued the following statement regarding MidAmerican’s announcement of its intent to build new Iowa wind farms:

Today is an important day in the history of Iowa’s renewable energy economy.

MidAmerican is wisely choosing to invest in clean, homegrown, 21st century power that has the potential to allow more than 190,000 residential customers to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels for electric power.

The decision by MidAmerican to expand its already significant position in wind is yet another example of how Iowa’s focus on renewable energy is succeeding.

The electricity market is one in which renewable energy production continues to enjoy subsidies like those we have utilized to great success in the Culver/Judge Administration to construct more than 40 wind farms in four years.

MidAmerican also is to be commended for choosing to invest early in the economic recovery, when challenging circumstances have made many utilities adopt a wait-and-see approach to renewable energy.

MidAmerican is proving clean energy can be profitable.

Finally, the focus on rural counties for construction of wind farms (in Adair, Adams, Calhoun, Cass and Marshall counties) will mean jobs and economic development in these counties at a time when they are much-needed, as new wind farms are constructed and operated.

When forward-thinking Iowa utilities invest in renewable energy technology, all Iowans win.
