S.R. 826 Palmetto Expressway/S.R. 836 Dolphin Expressway Interchange Project relieves congestion, creates jobs.

Continuing his focus on strengthening Florida’s economy, Governor Charlie Crist today praised the progress of the State Road 826 (Palmetto Expressway)/State Road 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange Reconstruction Project during a project dedication in Miami-Dade County.

The $559 million project, which broke ground in November 2009, will relieve congestion and is expected to create more than 15,000 jobs.

“In addition to alleviating congestion and reducing travel times, this project is helping put thousands of Floridians back to work,” said Governor Crist. “Used by over 400,000 motorists daily, the project also enhances the safety of motorists traveling on the Interchange.”

The S.R. 826 Palmetto Expressway/S.R. 836 Dolphin Expressway Interchange Reconstruction Project includes rebuilding and widening the Palmetto and Dolphin Expressways, constructing a four-level interchange while modifying two additional exchanges at Flagler Street on Palmetto and at Milam Dairy Road/NW 72nd Avenue on Dolphin.

“This project will provide incredible relief for the Miami-Dade workforce that uses this route to commute to work,” said Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Stephanie Kopelousos. “This transportation project will be a boost in getting Floridians back to work and improve the quality of life for Miami residents.”

When completed, the number of the interchange’s bridges will more than double, from the existing 20 to 45. At the widest part of the project, there will be 28 lanes where there are currently 10. The highest lane will be 110 feet in the air.

The project will be constructed in stages that allow traffic to be placed on the new phases as early as 2012.

Funding for the project comes from the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department, FDOT and federal programs.
