Forum on technology use in education to be held by IDB
A one-day seminar on the impact of information and communication technologies in education in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held at IDB headquarters in Washington, DC, on September 15, presenting pioneer experiences and large-scale initiatives throughout the region and abroad.
The forum, “Reinventing the Classroom: Social and Educational Impact of ICTs in Education”, will be hosted by IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno and inaugurated by Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez. Vázquez will highlight the CEIBAL project, which has turned Uruguay into the only country in the world that has effectively achieved the “one laptop per child” goal of providing hardware for one-on-one computing in primary and secondary public education.
Nicholas Negroponte, the architect of the One Laptop per Child initiative, will speak at the event, as well as Microsoft’s Vice President for Technology Strategy and Policy, Anoop Gupta.
Latin America and the Caribbean, as a region, has a worldwide lead in “one-on-one computing” initiatives such as One Laptop per Child and others. The IDB is financing the implementation of one such initiative in Haiti, and assisting with impact evaluation studies of different individual initiatives in six countries of the region.

The seminar will start promptly at 8:30 a.m., and the inaugural session, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. is open to the public. Participation in the technical sessions, starting at 11:00 a.m., is by invitation only.
Members of the media are welcome, but they are required to arrive at 8:00 a.m. for registration.
