Governor Charlie Crist today expressed his gratitude to members of the Florida National Guard’s 779th Engineer Battalion for their service as they return home from Iraq.

The homecoming ceremony was held at Henry W. McMillan Armory, with more than 150 members of the engineer battalion in attendance, as well as friends and family.

The battalion’s mission included support of engineer and construction operations. The unit returned to Fort Stewart, Georgia, after being deployed since May 2009.

“The bravery, courage and talent of the men and women in the 779th Engineer Battalion is truly admirable,” said Governor Crist. “I am grateful for the unit’s safe return and forever thankful for their honorable service and sacrifice. Our state and nation are stronger because of all they do.”

The 779th Engineer Battalion specializes in construction and maintenance of roads, vehicles, weapons, as well as training of Iraqi soldiers and leaders of Field Engineer Regiments in two Iraqi Army Divisions. The engineer battalion successfully completed more than 320 construction projects, repaired nearly 190 vehicles, and hauled over 3,200 tons of all classes of supplies for delivery in support of our engineer missions.

The unit was stationed at the Contingency Operating Site Marez in Mosul, Iraq and was in command of more than 600 Soldiers from Florida, West Virginia, Indiana, Hawaii and Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Fort Riley, Kansas.

Since their return on May 19, they have been completing post-mobilization processing at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

In May 2009, Governor Crist joined the brave men and women of the Florida National Guard 779th Engineer Battalion prior to their deployment.

Collectively, nearly 200 guardsmen and women were deployed.
