New Education Transformation Commission also will advise.

Governor Bev Perdue today named Dr. Bill Harrison, chair of the State Board of Education and former superintendent of Cumberland County Schools, to oversee the state’s implementation of $400 million in federal Race to the Top Funds.

In addition, he will chair the newly formed Governor’s Education Transformation Commission, which will include some of  the state’s top leaders in education and business.

The panel will provide guidance as the state pursues the Career and College – Ready, Set, Go! initiative:

  • recruiting and retaining quality teachers and administrators,
  • a comprehensive turnaround plan for low performing schools, and
  • 21st century technology for assessing students’ needs.

“Both Dr. Harrison and the commission will play an integral role in achieving the goal I have set for all schools in NC:  That every child must graduate high school with what it really takes to succeed in a career, in college or in technical training,” said Gov. Perdue. “That’s the mission of the Ready, Set, Go! program.”

Harrison, whose title will be governor’s advisor for education transformation, will receive a salary of $90,000 paid by federal funds.

He will continue to serve as chair of the State Board of Education.

Education leaders across the state stepped up with their support of the round two Race to the Top application, and the General Assembly passed legislation aimed at better arming local school districts to implement the plan.
