A delegation of 13 Atlantic Canadian companies will be in Miami Beach, Florida from November 8-10 to promote their products to potential buyers at the 2009 Americas Food & Beverage Show.

The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), today announced an investment of $124,715 in support of this mission.

“The Government of Canada is committed to helping companies build and strengthen their export capacity,” said Minister Ashfield. “The Americas Food & Beverage Show provides exceptional opportunities to form new partnerships and secure business deals. By investing in this trade mission, our government is helping Atlantic Canadian companies increase their potential for export sales and expand their export markets. This in turn, enhances the entire economic performance of our region.”

The mission is being organized by the Atlantic Food & Beverage Processors Association Inc. and includes pre-arranged one-on-one meetings between participating companies and prospective customers for their products. The delegates will also showcase their products at an Atlantic Canada pavilion, attend networking events and educational seminars and meet with cruise line buyers who purchase food and beverage products for 4.7 million passengers each year.

More than 5,000 buyers from 87 countries and 300 exhibitors from 18 countries are expected to take part in the 2009 show. Last year’s show generated $108.6 million in actual and projected sales. The Americas Food & Beverage Show is the largest event of its kind in North America.

“The show provides a very efficient way for our companies to take a good look at the huge potential that exists in the southern US and Latin America,” said Don Newman, executive director of the Atlantic Canada Food & Beverage Processors Association Inc. “The market is particularly attractive to us because we can get our product there by shipping down the east coast and because we have already seen that buyers in the area appreciate the high quality products that we are able to supply. The support from ACOA is critical to the initiative and is much appreciated by the industry and the association.”

Exporting is one of Atlantic Canada’s leading engines of economic growth generating revenue, fueling business opportunities and creating one out of every three jobs in the region. The Atlantic Canadian seafood and agri-food industries exported more than $3.5 billion worth of products in 2008, making them the region’s leading export sectors.

Financial assistance for this trade initiative is provided by ACOA through its Business Development Program. The program supports projects that promote entrepreneurship development, training and marketing and export development.
