Governor Jan Brewer today announced the Arizona Commerce Authority has awarded more than $1.3 million in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG) to 15 communities for energy-related projects.
In addition, $1.4 million was awarded to 23 communities in competitive EECBG grants.
“Our state is leading the way in solar energy and energy efficiency,” said Governor Brewer. “Arizona was recently named ‘Solar Energy King’ by a prestigious national business magazine. And helping our rural communities save money on energy costs can only spread our success.”
Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, Arizona’s EECBG Program, administered by the Arizona Commerce Authority’s Energy Office, was awarded program funding to finance a variety of EECBG projects, such as:
The competitive EECBG grants gave all participating communities a chance to fund additional energy-saving projects in their community,” said Robin Boudreau, EECBG Program Manager. “This first-time funding gave many local governments their first chance to implement energy-saving projects and programs on a community-wide level. And in some cases, not only will these projects save energy, but they’ll also educate the public of ‘off-the-shelf’ energy-saving technologies.”
In May, Governor Brewer announced EECBG awards of $4.8 million to 49 communities and five counties.
Overall, EECBG has funded 127 energy-related projects or programs in 64 communities and five counties.
These are communities with a population of 35,000 or less and five counties with the least population (based on 2007 census) that were eligible to participate in the program.
All projects or programs have EECBG funding and city/town or county approval and are in the process of being completed.
Projects break-down in the following percentages: energy efficiency retrofits (50%); energy efficiency and conservation programs (19%); renewable energy technologies on government buildings (15%); traffic signals and street lighting (9%); energy audits for buildings (5%) and other (2%).
