Attorney-General Robert McClelland today launched the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights.

The center is a new community organisation which will advocate on human rights issues and provide welfare services to Muslim women.

Mr McClelland said he was pleased to support the new organization, which will be run by the Islamic Women’s Welfare Council of Victoria.

“There is a strong history of human rights advocacy at the grassroots level in Australia and I’m pleased this tradition continues today,” Mr McClelland said.

“The Government – working with community organizations and leading advocacy groups such as the Australian Human Rights Council – is playing an important role in contributing to a vibrant and tolerant society.

“The organisers of the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights have said the creation of the new centre will bring a human rights approach on issues of disadvantage and inequality for Muslim women across Australia.

“Grassroots organisations such as these are essential to communities – they provide support and a voice for some of the more disadvantaged members of our society.

“By doing so, they play a key role in challenging negative attitudes and shaping community values.”

Mr McClelland said Australians enjoy rights that are not available in many other places.

“We must also recognise that there is still more we can do to treat each other with dignity and respect – real and lasting change in attitudes requires community involvement,” he said.

“In April last year, I made human rights education the centrepiece of Australia’s Human Rights Framework, with a strong focus on community education.

“This included grants to the Australian Human Rights Council and community groups to develop education campaigns that challenge people’s attitudes and promote greater acceptance within our communities.”
