£5.35 million coastal defences to protect Aberaeron will be officially opened by Environment Minister Jane Davidson.
Work started on the Welsh Assembly Government funded project in November 2008. The scheme consists of 75,000 tonnes of rock, and a new raised promenade wall will improve protection to the town against sea flooding and storm damage. It also includes new timber groynes that are designed to slow down long shore drift and build up the beach. Steps and an access ramp to improve accessibility have also been added.
Ms Davidson said:
“If we are to adapt successfully to climate change, then the way we manage our shoreline will be critical. This is what we are doing with this project, which will help protect the local area, homes, businesses and jobs. It is a great example of local government and the Welsh Assembly Government working together for the benefit of the community.
“This is the first of a number of significant Assembly Government funded coastal projects to strengthen our defence infrastructure. These projects aim to protect our coastal communities but go beyond simply providing improved defences. They also look at flood warnings, emergency response and awareness raising to help communities to adapt to the increasing threats posed by rising sea levels. The development of the next phase of the works at Aberaeron Harbour is well underway.”
