The tenant chairman of a housing association nearing its first year anniversary got stuck in at a ground-breaking ceremony in a Leicestershire village.
Colin Norman, chairman of Three Oaks Homes, took hold of a spade to mark the start of work to redevelop Duncan Avenue in Huncote.
Demolition of 32 homes in the street has begun and 49 houses, bungalows and flats will be built in their place. Phase one will see the construction of 30 homes for affordable rent and phase two will provide 10 properties for shared ownership and nine for sale.
Three Oaks Homes (TOH), which was formed in November last year following stock transfer from Blaby District Council, will manage the development. It will be owned by East Midlands Housing Association (EMHA), part of East Midlands Housing Group alongside TOH.
The work is being carried out by SDC Construction Group, based in Bedfordshire, which has experience building a range of public and private sector properties, including colleges, hospitals and councils.
Representatives from the firm joined guests from TOH, EMHA, Blaby District Council, Huncote Parish Council and tenants at the ceremony on September 16th. Chan Kataria, Chief Executive of EMHG, gave the welcoming address.
Colin said: “Consultation with Huncote residents and parish councillors enabled all to be involved in the selection of contractor and architect. Their input has influenced the design of the scheme, of which we are all proud.
“We at Three Oaks Homes – and all stakeholders – feel we have a development fit for local residents for now and many years into the future. It will be a testament to the hard work of everyone involved.”
The near £7million redevelopment has been made possible thanks to contributions and support from the Homes and Communities Agency (£1.7 million), Blaby District Council, the New Growth Point Fund from Communities and Local Government (CLG) (£108,000) and a subsidy from EMHA (£800,000).
