The Conservative Party has held the first day of its Spring Forum – the party’s last conference before the General Election.

George Osborne and William Hague were amongst those addressing supporters in Brighton, spelling out the choice that faces the British people.

The Conservatives have also launched a leaflet setting out the choices facing people at this election.

“After 13 years of Labour failings the country needs new leadership and a new sense of direction. The Conservatives are ready to serve and ready to bring about the real, lasting change that Britain needs”, Conservative Party Chairman Eric Pickles said.

The speeches can be watched live or retrospectively here.

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne spoke about how the Conservatives would “unleach the forces of enterprise”. He also set out the choice at the coming election, saying “our country stands at one of those forks we come across as we travel the roads of our history – and just as in 1979 we had to make a choice, so we have to choose today”.

“We can either continue down a path of decline and fall, a path with rising debts, higher mortgage rates, ever rising taxes and high unemployment. That is Labour’s path. It always has been. We know where it leads and we must never allow this country to be dragged there once again.

Or we can change direction – tell the difficult truths, put debt and taxes back on a downwards trajectory, and create the solid economic foundations of a Britain that works for all. That is the Conservative path.”

Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague pointed out that Gordon Brown has been “dragged kicking and screaming” to call the coming election. “His decision will be made for him, as so many of them are, by time running out”.  Hague also spoke of the choice facing Britain, saying that the choice was as stark as “change or ruin”:

“When Gordon Brown took over, this, our great country, was the 4th largest economy in the world. Now it is falling behind and forecast within 5 years to be the 11th, behind not just growing giants like China, but behind our neighbours France and Italy. We were ranked 7th in the world for the competitiveness of our economy. Now we are 13th. We were 4th in the world for our tax and regulation. Now we are 84th and 86th.

We are the last G20 country to emerge from recession. We are borrowing almost as much of our income as Greece, but the Greeks have more plans than Gordon Brown, like everyone else in the world, to do something about it.”
