Scotland Government Appoints Two New Enterprise Board Members

Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, Jim Mather, today announced the appointment of two new board members to Scottish Enterprise.

The new members are:

Professor Russel Griggs OBE – Professor Griggs has held a number of non-executive positions in the private and public sector as well as running his own consultancy business. He served on the board of the Imes Group and is Chair of A4e Scotland, the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Edinburgh, and a director of Future Route Ltd, a financial software company based in London. He is also Chair of CBI’s UK SME Council, the Scottish Government’s independent Regulatory Review Group in Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway College. He is a Board member of VisitScotland and a member of the Scottish Committee of the Quality Assurance Agency and the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council.

He is honorary Professor of the University of Glasgow and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university in 2002 for service to industry and the university. Professor Griggs was awarded an OBE in 2008 for services to Scottish industry.

Mr Iain McLaren BA CA – Mr McLaren was formerly Senior Partner of KMPG in Scotland. During his professional career he focused on audit and transactions work for some of Scotland’s largest listed and private companies primarily in the energy, house building, construction and technology sectors.

He is currently Senior Independent Director of Cairn Energy plc and a director of two investment trusts. He is a member of the Court of Heriot-Watt University and a board member of SCDI as well as Vice-President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

These appointments are for three years and will run from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012. The posts are part-time and attract an annual remuneration of £12,581 for a time commitment of 2.5 days per month.

Russel Griggs was appointed to the board of Dumfries and Galloway College in 2006; this post is part-time and members receive no remuneration for their time commitment. Professor Griggs was also appointed to VisitScotland and the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council in 2009 and these part-time posts attract remuneration of £9,000 and £1,000 respectively per annum.

Iain McLaren was appointed as Governor to St Columba’s Hospice in 2005, as Director to the Festival City Theatres Trust in 2008 and as a Member of the Court of Heriot-Watt University in 2009. All these posts are part-time and Mr McLaren does not receive any remuneration.

Scottish Enterprise is the Scottish Government’s main agency for economic development in North East, Central and Lowland Scotland. The Scottish Government provides Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise with a clear strategic direction through the Government Economic Strategy.

This Ministerial public appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland’s Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees to make public any political activity within the last five years. Neither of the appointees has declared any political activity.
