Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism said that the total number of visitors to our cultural institutions in 2009 exceeded 3 million, up by almost 23,000 visitors when compared with 2008 figures.
The National Gallery of Ireland, National Concert Hall, National Library of Ireland, National Archives and National Museum (Decorative Arts & History) have all recorded significant increases over 2008 visitor figures.
Commenting on the 2009 visitor figures, Minister Cullen said: “Our museums and galleries continued to provide interesting and educational opportunities to visitors from home and abroad in what was a difficult year.
In addition to the institutions’ impressive own collections, a number of exceptional and high profile exhibitions, such as Picturing New York at IMMA; the Edvard Munch and Thomas Roberts exhibitions at the National Gallery and the very popular Yeats exhibition at the National Library, undoubtedly contributed to these very positive visitor figures. With the re-opening of the Natural History Museum in April, and the National Concert Hall continuing to attract the very best in both national and international musical entertainment, it is expected that these visitor numbers can be maintained in 2010.”
The Minister thanked the institutions and their staff for their dedicated commitment in attracting the interest of the general public and in enhancing the visitor experience as part of our cultural tourism initiative. Minister Cullen said: “All of our cultural institutions play a significant role in our cultural tourism product and the exceptional quality and diversity of our museum exhibits, our manuscripts, documents, and various artworks on display are critical to the ongoing success of these institutions and serve as a reminder of our national ability to invent, create and inspire. They also demonstrate how Irish culture continues to be recognised worldwide.”
The National Cultural Institutions provide free educational and family friendly events throughout the year and access to collections held by the National Cultural Institutions is free of charge.
