Both of the city’s football clubs have signed up to a Dundee Community Safety Partnership scheme to use polycarbonate drinking glasses in their public bars.
A consignment of the virtually unbreakable drinkware was delivered to Dens Park ahead of Dundee FC’s home clash against Partick Thistle.
Club officials expect the Penman Suite to be packed out as the Dark Blues take on one of their rivals for promotion to the top flight.
Convener of Dundee City Council’s licensing committee Rod Wallace was on hand at the ground to help club staff take delivery of a consignment of the safer glasses.
He said: “As part of a push to boost the night time economy of the city Dundee Community Safety Partnership has been offering polycarbonate glasses to licensees free of charge.
“The polycarbonates come in a variety of shapes of sizes and although we don’t have a big problem with drink related violence, providing safer glasses gives drinkers more peace of mind.”
Dundee and Dundee United have agreed to pilot the move in their public lounges where children are allowed before and after matches.
The move is part of an ongoing campaign to encourage licensees to switch from traditional glass in an effort to reduce the chances of injuries arising from any drink related incident.
It is believed that Dundee is the first city to have its senior football clubs signed up to back such an initiative.
