Londoners are being warned about hundreds of different scams that might be used against them in attempts to steal money or their identity as part of the month long ‘Scamnesty’ campaign.
During February Consumer Direct London is producing information on different scams that are currently operating in the UK.
Consumer Direct call centres receive a vast number of inquiries from concerned people who have fallen foul of very complex and enticing scams.
Common scams can include pyramid schemes, lottery wins or investment opportunities. These scams work to phish for identities, personal details and/or bank details. By publishing information on these scams, Consumer Direct London is hoping that people will be vigilant when asked for personal details or when being asked for money.
Chairman of London Councils, Councillor Merrick Cockell said, “It is crucial that consumers are adequately advised of the various kinds of scams that are appearing more frequently in many different guises in everyday life. With internet and emails being readily available on mobile phones there are now many different ways to get caught in a scam.
Crooks and bogus callers are looking to make quick money but it is vital that consumers apply caution when giving out personal information. If they suspect anything is wrong we recommend they ring Consumer Direct for further advice.”
London Councils works with Trading Standards to provide the Consumer Direct Advice Service in London.
