The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today welcomed the agreement to integrate the Australian Technical College – Northern Tasmania into the Tasmanian education and training system.

The agreement was reached after Catholic Education Tasmania made a decision to not proceed with its proposal to take ownership of the Northern Tasmania ATC.

The Australian and Tasmanian Governments have worked closely with the Board of the Australian Technical College to develop plans for the integration of the ATC into Tasmania’s system.

To provide the best opportunities and outcomes for ATC students, they will move into Tasmania’s post-Year 10 public education and training system and the Tasmanian Government will formally take responsibility for the education of students currently attending the ATC on 1 January 2010.

Member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom also welcomed the announcement saying this brings certainty for students and will ensure that training will still be provided in Burnie at the Cradle Coast Campus.

Member for Bass Jodie Campbell joined with Ms Gillard in welcoming the announcement which will see the Launceston Campus become part of the Tasmanian Polytechnic system.

As well as ensuring all ATCs are integrated into existing education and training systems, the Australian Government is also delivering $2.5 billion for the Trade Training Centres in Schools program that will benefit all Australian secondary schools.
