Fourth CET Centre Appointed at NUS to Offer Infocomm Professionals Upgrading Opportunities that Combine Cutting-Edge Research with Expert Practitioner Knowledge

The Continuing Education and Training (CET) offerings in the rapidly growing infocomm sector have been enhanced with the appointment of a fourth CET Centre, the Strategic Technology Management Institute (STMI), to provide best-in-class training programmes aligned to the National Infocomm Competency Framework (NICF) under the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) system.

Set up by the School of Computing (SoC) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with support from the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), STMI leverages the cutting-edge research expertise of NUS School of Computing, combining it with the expert knowledge of industry practitioners. This approach enhances the value of STMI’s CET offerings, allowing course participants to acquire up-to-date technological knowledge and keep pace with the rapid developments in the infocomm sector even while undergoing training. Participants can thus be assured that the knowledge and skills they acquire during training are at the forefront of industry needs.

Commenting on the opening of the latest CET centre for the infocomm sector, Mr Chan Heng Kee, Chief Executive of WDA, said, “As an industry, Infocomm contributes significantly to Singapore’s GDP and creates many well-paying jobs. The adoption of Infocomm can also raise our businesses’ productivity and improve the standard of living of our people. The launch of STMI will help professionals in the Infocomm industry keep pace with the latest knowledge and skills needs. By doing so, STMI will contribute to the continued growth of the industry, and the ability of Singaporeans to seize the new career opportunities created.”

Professor Ooi Beng Chin, Dean of NUS School of Computing, said, “The NUS School of Computing, together with its predecessor departments, has over 30 years of experience in offering computing education at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD levels. With the expertise and reputation that we have built up at home and globally, we believe we can play a meaningful role in benchmarking executive education courses for infocomm professionals of various levels, from executives, to managers and the senior management. At the same time, in working with companies to provide courses that meet the needs of professionals in the middle to upper echelons of the organisation, we believe we are also setting up an additional channel of exchange with industry. This will serve to enhance our first-hand understanding of industry.”

Building on partnerships with local and overseas universities, infocomm companies and government agencies, STMI will offer trainees an immersive environment, from conceptual to realistic case studies. The comprehensive list of offerings includes in-depth technology courses, such as business analytics and service-oriented architecture; and management courses, such as structured thinking and communication, as well as risk management and governance in IT projects. These areas of training are critical to ensure the success of the Government’s plans to nurture a pool of local IT managers over the next few years for the industry.

Dr Charles Ling, Director of STMI said, “Each of the three key parties – the government, the university and the industry – brings their unique value propositions to the partnership. The government brings the governing standards, in this case, the National Infocomm Competency Framework, and supports this further with attractive funding to defray the cost of training; the university brings the rigour of cutting-edge research, hence, depth; and the industry brings the experience and what I would like to term as “War Stories”, which form the breadth. This formidable combination will enhance the richness and quality of STMI’s training.”

STMI intends to train more than 1,400 professionals over three years. This, in turn, will contribute to Singapore’s position as a regional IT Hub with a ready pool of skilled IT professionals to leverage fresh opportunities the sector has to offer.
