Singapore will be hosting three regional meetings on the environment from 29 to 30 October 2009 – the 11th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment, the 5th Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution and the 8th ASEAN Plus Three Environment Ministers Meeting.
Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim and Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Amy Khor will represent Singapore at the meetings.
11th AMME
The ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME) has served as a triennial forum for ASEAN Environment Ministers to exchange views on regional and global environmental issues. The 11th AMME on 29 October 2009 will see the exchange of views on environmental sustainability challenges from various perspectives including Environmentally Sustainable Cities, Water Resources Management, Coastal and Marine Environment, Nature Conservation and Biodiversity, and Climate Change.
COP5
The 5th Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution (COP5) is held on an annual basis. At the COP5 meeting on 30 October 2009, ASEAN Environment Ministers will review the progress of the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution.
As part of the region’s ongoing efforts to tackle tranboundary haze pollution, Singapore will also be hosting a Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee Forum on Prevention and Mitigation of Land and Forest Fires (MSC Forum) on 28 October 2009.
The MSC Forum will bring together various government agencies, International Organisations (IOs), Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), and private companies to share on experiences and best practices gained from sub-regional actions undertaken to tackle land and forest fires such as the Indonesia-Singapore Collaboration in Jambi Province; and to explore on possible collaboration to prevent and mitigate the fires.
8th ASEAN Plus Three EMM
The annual ASEAN Plus Three Environment Ministers Meeting (EMM) aims to enhance and promote environmental cooperation and partnerships between ASEAN and the Plus Three Countries. ASEAN Environment Ministers will meet their counterparts from Japan, the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of Korea on 30 October 2009 to discuss on-going cooperative environmental activities and projects, and other potential areas of collaboration.
