PM Lee Hsien Loong officially opens Marina Bay waterfront promenade and city gallery.
Official opening held in conjunction with The New Paper Big Walk @ Marina Bay and weekend carnival.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officially opened the Marina Bay waterfront promenade and Marina Bay City Gallery this morning, held in conjunction with The New Paper Big Walk @ Marina Bay.
The official opening of the 3.5 km waterfront promenade enables all Singaporeans and visitors to enjoy the entire necklace of attractions around the bay. It also represents the unveiling of an exciting new signature skyline for Singapore.
To enable Singaporeans to have a meaningful experience of the waterfront promenade, the official opening event is held in conjunction with The New Paper Big Walk. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong flagged off the Big Walk at 7:30am this morning, to a crowd of over 20,000 participants.
The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), development agency for Marina Bay, also organised a weekend carnival on 17 and 18 July, to offer a variety of family-fun activities at different locations along the promenade for the community.
The waterfront promenade – a place for all Singaporeans to enjoy
The 3.5km waterfront promenade provides a continuous route linking the Marina Centre, Collyer Quay and Bayfront areas. The landscaped waterfront promenade forms a key pedestrian link between the developments at Collyer Quay and Marina Bay Sands. It also acts as an ideal vantage point for events in and around Marina Bay.
“The opening of the waterfront promenade is of special significance not only to URA and the stakeholders in Marina Bay, but to all Singaporeans. It is a leisure destination where everyone, young and old, individuals and families can gather, spend bonding time together and reconnect with our city. Indeed, Marina Bay will be a place where we can work, live and play 24/7,” said Mrs Cheong Koon Hean, URA’s chief executive officer.
The promenade boasts several unique design features. The stretch along Bayfront Avenue is a two-tier promenade, comprising a granite-paved upper-level promenade and a lower-level timber boardwalk. The upper-level promenade features the ‘Mist Walk’ – a 250-m long sculptural, tubular stainless steel structure that sprays clouds of mist to reduce ambient temperature and provide a cooling experience in the day. It is also programmed with integrated lights to provide a visual experience at night. An outdoor sound system pipes in music to enhance the ambience of the promenade.
At the southern corner of the Bay, the promenade widens to create a family-oriented public open space, with a series of linear water features which children will find appealing. The stretch of waterfront promenade along Marina Boulevard features three ‘Breeze Shelters’ – pavilions with large solar-powered fans – which will provide a cool and breezy ‘pause point’ for visitors. Two Olympic-themed sculptures, entitled A World United and Breathe, commemorate the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, and are also located along this stretch of the promenade. Sponsored by City Developments Limited (CDL), the two artworks are a collaborative project between the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), CDL, and the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC).
Located opposite The Sail is The Promontory @ Marina Bay, an interim public venue for events, such as this weekend’s Big Carnival.
Over at the Youth Olympic Park, which is another feature along the promenade, are several more artworks that commemorate the Youth Olympic Games. For instance, there are installations inspired by the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. There are also various Singapore 2010 Pictogram Seats in the Park, where visitors can have a better idea of what the various sports and culture and education programmes in the Games. The Youth Olympic Park is a collaboration between the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC), Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and National Parks Board (NParks), with sponsorship from Deloitte Singapore.

The city gallery showcases the story of Singapore’s urban transformation and the development of Marina Bay through innovative exhibits. The key highlight is an innovative city model offering a bird’s eye view of key landmarks in Marina Bay that incorporates lighting and other visual effects. There are also a series of touch-activated exhibits which will allow visitors learn more about the area and navigate around the Bay. The Marina Bay City Gallery will be opened from 12pm to 7pm on Sunday, 18 July 2010 (ie, official opening day). More details about the exhibits can be found at Annex C.
Celebration time at Marina Bay
The Big Carnival at Marina Bay, held over the weekend on 17 and 18 July, is expected to draw a crowd of about 80,000. Highlights of the Carnival included a movie screening of “Avatar” which was held at The Promontory@Marina Bay (next to NTUC Centre) on 17 July, as well as an e-gaming concert by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Wind Symphony which will be held on 18 July at 7.30pm.
