Total Manufacturing Performance

On a year-on-year basis, manufacturing output increased 39.8% in November 2010.

Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 16.1%.

On a three-month moving average basis, manufacturing output in November 2010 increased 31.7% compared to the same period last year.

For the first eleven months of 2010, manufacturing output expanded 31.8%. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output increased 1.1% in November 2010.

Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output level in November 2010 remained unchanged from the preceding month.

Performance by cluster

Output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster expanded 166.7% year-on-year in November, led by a 189.0% jump in the pharmaceuticals segment.

The strong performance in the latter was attributed to the low base last year as a result of a different mix of active pharmaceutical ingredients produced.

The medical technology segment also grew 13.6% with increased export demand for medical instruments.

On a year-to-date basis, the biomedical output grew 53.3%.

Output of the precision engineering cluster grew 33.9% year-on-year in November 2010.

The robust growth was attributed to the machinery & systems segment which expanded 71.4%, as a result of healthy export orders for semiconductor related equipment and the ramp-up of production from new plants.

In the first eleven months of 2010, output of the precision engineering cluster was 41.9% higher than the same period a year ago.

Output of the electronics cluster increased 23.1% in November 2010 from a year ago. Strong demand for consumer electronics continued to boost output in the semiconductor segment.

The infocomms & consumer electronics segment also expanded 12.2% while output of the computer peripherals and other electronics modules & components segments declined 1.9% and 21.8% respectively.

On a year-to-date basis, electronics output expanded 38.5%.

The chemicals cluster’s output grew 9.7% year-on-year in November 2010, underpinned by higher output in all segments within the cluster.

In particular, the petrochemicals and petroleum segments saw output gains of 12.0% and 11.1% respectively. On a year-to-date basis, output of the chemicals cluster was 13.3% higher than the same period in the previous year.

The transport engineering cluster’s output inched up 0.5% in November 2010 on a year-on-year basis. The land transport segment recorded the largest output growth of 44.2% with higher production of automotive parts.

The marine & offshore engineering segment, on the other hand, declined 11.3%, with lower percentage of completion in shipbuilding and oil rigs projects.

Cumulatively, output of the cluster contracted 5.8% from January to November 2010 compared to the same period in 2009.

Output of the general manufacturing cluster dipped 0.3% year-on-year in November 2010.

The food, beverages & tobacco segment’s output increased 6.7% as a result of higher production of confectionery and beverage products to meet the festive demand. On the other hand, the miscellaneous industries segment shrank 3.7% with lower production of garments, structural metal products and metal storage tanks.

Cumulative output of the cluster in the first eleven months of 2010 rose 11.8% compared to the same period last year.
