Singapore Infocom Services Industry Up By 5.2% In 2009

The Singapore Department of Statistics conducts an annual survey on the services industries to collect a wide range of data for studies and analyses.

The first survey on the services industries was conducted in 1968 for the reference year 1967 and subsequently at regular intervals. Since 1984, the inquiry was carried out on an annual basis.

The latest survey was carried out in 2010 for reference year 2009. This year, the reports will focus on several services industries of importance to the Singapore economy.

This report on Information and Communications Services is the Department’s fourth issue in the series. A final consolidated report on The Services Sector will provide a performance overview of the overall services sector.

To date, the four reports which have been released are as follows:

  • Health Services
  • Food and Beverage Services Transport and Storage Services
  • Information and Communications Services

In 2009, the Information and Communication (Info & Comm) services industry comprised about 6,100 establishments. The industry employed about 74,800 workers, or an average of 12 workers per establishment.

I. ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE

Total operating receipts generated by the Info & Comm services industry was $32.5 billion in 2009, a growth of 5.2 per cent over 2008. On a per establishment basis, operating receipts increased by 16.0 per cent to $5.3 million in 2009.

Total operating expenditure incurred was $29.0 billion in 2009, an increase of 4.2 per cent over 2008. Operating expenditure per establishment rose by 14.9 per cent to $4.7 million during the same period.

Total operating surplus increased by 12.4 per cent to $4.9 billion in 2009. On a per establishment basis, operating surplus increased by 24.0 per cent to $800,000 in 2009.

Total value added of the Info & Comm services industry increased by 9.2 per cent to reach $10.5 billion in 2009. On a per establishment basis, value added expanded by 20.5 per cent to $1.7 million in 2009.

II. MAIN ACTIVITIES IN INFO & COMM SERVICES

Firms engaged in computer programming & consultancy, which constituted about two thirds of the total establishments in Info & Comm services, accounted for 52.1 per cent of the industry’s total employment in 2009. On a per establishment basis, the telecommunications segment registered the highest average employment size of 26 workers.

In terms of operating receipts and value added, the telecommunications segment was the largest contributor, accounting for 34.0 per cent and 42.0 per cent of the respective totals in the Info & Comm services industry (Chart

The computer programming & consultancy segment also contributed a significant 25.8 per cent to the industry’s operating receipts and 31.3 per cent to the industry’s value added.

In 2009, remuneration and purchases of goods & materials were among the top five business cost items across all the segments in the Info & Comm services industry, except for the information services segment (Table 1).

In particular, these two business cost items made up 63.3 per cent of the computer programming & consultancy segment’s total operating expenditure. For firms engaged in publishing services, royalties was the top business cost item, accounting for 47.4 per cent of the segment’s total operating expenditure.

III. KEY PERFORMANCE RATIOS

Profitability Ratio of the telecommunications segment continued to be the highest at 28.4 per cent in 2009

Earnings-expenditure Ratio was 35.7 per cent for the telecommunications segment in 2009, lower than the 36.1 per cent registered in 2008. Telecommunications services continued to have the highest earnings-expenditure ratio among the various Info & Comm services segments.

Average Annual Remuneration per Employee was the highest for employees in the publishing segment. They received an average annual remuneration of $96,900 in 2009, higher than the industry’s average of $75,900.

Value Added per Worker was $140,600 for the Info & Comm services industry in 2009, higher than the $131,000 registered in 2008.

Telecommunications firms continued to record the highest average value added of $263,100 per worker within the Info & Comm services industry (Chart 5). This was followed by firms in the publishing segment, which reported an average value added of $167,600 per worker.

IV. PERFORMANCE BY FIRM SIZE

Firms with less than 100 workers formed the majority (98.2 per cent) in the Info & Comm services industry in 2009.

However, firms with 200 workers & above which constituted only 1.0 per cent, contributed the most to total operating receipts (71.5 per cent).

This segment’s valued added per worker was also the highest at $192,700 in 2009.
