Starting 1 April 2011, families on the Public Assistance (PA) scheme can expect to receive more cash allowance every month.
A single-person household will get $400 per month.
The increase in PA allowance rates will benefit some 3,000 households.
Families with children will also receive additional assistance to cater for a school-going child’s incidental expenses or a toddler/infant’s additional nutritional and hygiene needs.
From 1 April 2011, the cap for this additional assistance will be adjusted from $130 to $150 per child per month.
Thus, a family of 4 on the PA scheme – comprising 2 adults and 2 children – may now receive up to $1,350 per month.
The PA scheme provides financial help for Singaporeans with no or little means of income and family support.
Apart from a monthly cash allowance, PA recipients also receive free medical treatment in polyclinics and government/restructured hospitals, as well as free education for their children.
In addition, PA recipients receive support and assistance from the various community organisations.
MCYS reviews the PA allowance rates periodically to ensure they are adequate to meet the basic living needs of PA recipients.
The PA allowance for a single person has increased progressively from $260 in April 2007 to $400 in April 2011.
