Singapore Improves Bus Services

In an ongoing review, LTA, SMRT and SBS Transit have identified more service improvement measures for buses.

These include increasing the frequency and capacity on more crowded bus routes.

A new express bus service will also be launched, offering commuters travelling from Bukit Batok to the Central Business District another travel option during the morning peak hours.

Quarterly Review of Bus Services

SBST and SMRT roll out more service improvement measures:

As part of an ongoing review process involving the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and public transport operators, SBS Transit and SMRT, more service improvement measures for buses have been identified for implementation the during peak periods. (Please refer to the Annex for a list of these bus services.)

SBS Transit has identified nine heavily-utilised bus services for improvement in this round.

More double-deck buses have been deployed on four of these services, while additional bus trips have been added on another four services.

Later this month, SBS Transit will also be adding more bus trips on one more service – Service 15.

SMRT will be adding more buses and trips to two of its heavily-utilised services.

It will also be launching a new express bus service -Service 868 – on 28 September, to offer commuters travelling from Bukit Batok to the Central Business District (CBD) another travel option during the morning peak hours.

Introduced as part of the Parallel Bus Service scheme, Service 868 will take commuters into the heart of the CBD in about 60 minutes.

LTA’s Acting Group Director for Vehicle and Transit Licensing, Mr Colin Lim said, “We are very pleased to announce further improvements to the public bus services. This is part of an ongoing review process, and the operators are rolling out a host of improvements this round — from improvements to existing services, to the addition of a new express bus service. This underscores the commitment of the LTA and the public transport operators to improve basic bus services and to provide more choices for commuters.”

Mr Gan Juay Kiat, Chief Executive Officer, SBS Transit said, “SBS Transit is committed to providing commuters with reliable and affordable train and bus services. In this regard, we continually add more trips to increase frequency and capacity on our more crowded bus routes, according to changes in travel demands and patterns. We will continue to do more to meet commuters’ expectations”.

Ms Kang Huey Ling, Vice President, SMRT Buses Ltd said, “SMRT remains committed to improving our bus services to enhance the travel experience of commuters. Following our earlier improvements to 10 bus services, we are now enhancing two more bus services and introducing Express Bus Service 868. This new express service will bring greater connectivity to commuters living in the west heading towards the city. We support the Government’s efforts to encourage more Singaporeans to make public transport a choice mode.”
