Over 1,000 food stalls from across Singapore are doing their part to help ease the pressures of increasing prices.
This was announced by Chairman of the Retail Price Watch Group (RPWG) and Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower, Lee Yi Shyan as Food Junction and Food Republic became the latest to join in with their support.
Since 20 March, over 1,000 hawkers from various parts of Singapore, such Bedok North, Kovan, Hougang, Serangoon North and Radin Mas have stepped forward voluntarily to hold their prices for six months or longer.
Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Manpower, Lee Yi Shyan said that it was encouraging to see that businesses were also stepping up to the challenge.
All participating stalls will be presented with the price watch label to help customers identify the hawkers.
Following the lead of the hawkers, the Food courts are also pitching in with their support.
Food Junction and 100 per cent of its tenants have pledged to maintain their prices for the next six months.
This is across all its 13 food courts or a total of 216 stalls. The scale of participation among Food Junction’s tenants clearly demonstrates their support for to serve the community.
Mr Eric Gan, Food Junction’s Chief Financial Officer says “When we first broached the subject about them revising their price list to reflect the general increase in operating costs, we were surprised that more than 90% of them indicated they had no intention to do so.” He added that many of their tenants believe that the inflation is only temporary and are confident of the Government’s ability to rein in rising costs.
“We are hoping that our loyal customers and consumers at large, will support Food Junction’s outlets and increase patronage at our stalls, and that the higher sales volume will more than mitigate any raw material cost increases,” he adds.
Food Republic is offering a 10 per cent discount at all of the stalls in their food courts upon the presentation of the “Food Republic Privilege Card”.
150,000 cards will be distributed free-of-charge to customers across Singapore.
The prices at Food Republic’s Drinks Stall, Desserts Stall and Juice Bar will also be maintained for six months.
Mr. Lee Yi Shyan, who was present for the launch of Food Republic’s privilege card, said, “It is encouraging to see that businesses are also stepping up to the challenge. While they have different cost structures and employ different initiatives, the end result is still the same. They are doing this for to help Singaporeans weather any price increases they encounter.”
The Retail Price Watch Group is proud to support the hawkers and the stallholders.
All participating stalls will be presented with the price watch label to help customers identify the hawkers.
