Acting Minister for Education, Senator Mark Arbib is delighted to announce that more than 1100 schools around Australia are today participating in National Reading Day.

National Reading Day provides an opportunity for Australian school children to participate in a reading activity on a mass scale.

Across Australia, students were invited to participate in a Story Sharing Safari to celebrate National Reading Day during National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW).

National Reading Day follows the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week which invited children to explore a Book Safari theme.

Senator Arbib said encouraging students to develop a love of books and reading was important for children’s ongoing development.

Today schools and students are spending time reading together, sharing stories and listening to the stories of others.

Now in its third year, National Reading Day is a key event in National Literacy and Numeracy Week, which this year runs from 31 August to 6 September.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) is an initiative designed to raise community awareness of the importance of effective literacy and numeracy skills for all Australians.

The theme for NLNW 2009 is Getting the Basics Right to highlight the fact that students must be proficient in literacy and numeracy to be able to fully participate in the world of work and further study throughout their lives.

The Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) and the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) have developed a range of activities for National Reading Day designed to promote reading and the development of students’ literacy skills.
