The Singapore Cultural Statistics in Brief (2003-2009) revealed that interest in arts and culture in Singapore has remained strong despite the economic downturn last year.
The publication provides an update on the state of Singapore’s arts and cultural sector including arts and cultural activities, heritage activities as well as the usage of library resources.
The latest release of the Singapore Cultural Statistics in Brief (2003-2009) by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts reveals that interest in arts and culture in Singapore remains strong despite the economic downturn last year.
The Singapore Cultural Statistics in Brief (2003-2009) provides an update on the state of Singapore’s arts and cultural sector.
The arts and cultural sector reviewed in this publication includes arts and cultural activities of various genres (e.g. Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Literary Arts), heritage activities like exhibitions in museums, as well as usage of library resources.
The economic downturn in 2009 did not affect ticket sales of performing arts events. In fact, the number of tickets sold and total gross takings increased from 675,200 and $37.5 million in 2008 to 820,200 and $42.6 million in 2009 respectively.
This was in spite of a 4% decline in the number of arts activities from 30,580 in 2008 to 29,286 in 2009.
2009 saw more people visiting the museums, with visitorship to national museums increasing from 2.4 million in 2008 to 2.6 million in 2009.
The number of changing exhibits at our National Museums has increased from 39 in 2008 to 46 in 2009.
Some of the popular exhibits in 2009 include An Unbroken Line – The Wu Guanzhong Donation Collection and Baba Bling.
The libraries also recorded more visitors and more people borrowing library materials.
Visitorship and loans increased from 37.1 million and 27.8 million in 2008 to 38.7 million and 31.5 million in 2009 respectively.
This illustrates the significant community role that NLB plays in Singaporeans’ lifelong learning and knowledge pursuits.
Over the past seven years, the arts and culture landscape remained vibrant and positive, with the number of arts organisations increasing at a steady pace from 549 in 2003 to 1,004 in 2009.
