Commenting on the latest HESA data on student enrollments and entrants for 2008/09, Minister of State for Higher Education David Lammy said.

“In ‘Higher Ambitions’ we set out our vision for the future expansion of higher education, including the need for a wider and more flexible range of study modes so it’s especially encouraging to see more people being awarded foundation degrees. These help both full-time and part-time learners develop their skills and careers whilst helping businesses ensure they get, develop and retain the talent needed to remain strong in these challenging economic times.

“Today’s figures also show that the number of undergraduate students studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are up 3% and at postgraduate level up 7%. It is critical to our future growth that we have the graduates with the skills to drive the new industries and jobs of the future which is precisely why the Government enabled an additional 10,000 student places in these subjects last year.”
