The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, and the NSW Minister for Health, Carmel Tebbutt, today announced that construction of the new Narrabri District Health Service redevelopment would begin soon.

Richard Crooks Construction Pty Ltd has been selected as the successful tenderer to build the new hospital.

Ms Roxon said the Narrabri District Health Service redevelopment is a partnership between the Commonwealth and NSW Governments.

“The project has a total value of $41.7 million, of which the Rudd Government has contributed $27 million,” she said.

“This state-of-the-art facility will be an outstanding asset to the Narrabri district community and will ensure the growing and changing health needs of local families are met now and into the future.”

“This is very exciting news for the people of Narrabri and surrounding rural and remote communities, including Wee Waa, Pilliga, Gwabegar and Burren Junction.”

Ms Tebbutt said that construction is expected to begin by early January 2010 and the project is expected to be completed by early 2012.

An earth pad will be constructed for the new building to sit on to ensure it is above flood level and a new single-storey building will then be built to house the hospital and the community health services.

The ambulance station, staff accommodation and helipad will be built in stages after the main building is completed to allow the existing hospital to operate with minimal disruption during construction.

The old hospital will be demolished for these next stages to occur.

“I’m proud of the way the local staff and community members have come together to ensure this project was designed with extensive local consultation,” Ms Tebbutt said.

“It will be a credit to the hard work and diligence of many people and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.”

Major features of the new facility include:

  • new wards, emergency department, birthing suite and operating theatre
  • a total of 34 beds, including 24 overnight acute beds, 4 overnight sub-acute beds and six day stay beds
  • co-located and integrated primary and community health services, including an additional consultation/treatment room
  • NSW Ambulance Service station
  • two GP/visiting specialist consultation rooms, as well as a procedure room
  • a dedicated therapy/gymnasium room for the use of physiotherapy patients
  • a dedicated mental health safe room
  • two special care rooms for use by palliative care patients
  • staff accommodation, including two, two-bedroom units, as well as a four-bedroom house
  • a helipad
  • improved car parking.

Ms Roxon said: “This type of building work in Narrabri is being replicated all around Australia as the Rudd Government invests billions of dollars in essential health and hospital infrastructure.”
