The Bureau of Meteorology continues to calculate the Fire Danger Index to determine Fire Danger Rating for the 15 weather forecast districts across the state.
Fire Danger Ratings are based on a combination of weather conditions and fuel characteristics in the forecast district. In past years when the index exceeded 50 the Fire Danger Rating was stated to be Extreme.
To better inform the community of the severity of fire weather conditions the Country Fire Service and the Bureau of Meteorology have agreed to further subdivide the index when above 50. The new subdivisions for Fire Danger Ratings (and Fire Danger Index) are Severe (50-74), Extreme (75-99), Catastrophic (100+). For more information on the new fire danger rating scale see www.cfs.sa.gov.au/site/community_information/prepare_act_survive.jsp
From this fire season the Bureau in South Australia is issuing Fire Weather Warnings when the Fire Danger Rating is expected to be Severe, Extreme or Catastrophic in a weather forecast district(s). The Fire Weather Warning will also include a Total Fire Ban message provided by the Country Fire Service. The Total Fire Ban message will include Action Statements appropriate to the situation. Note that Fire Bans may in some circumstances be issued for reasons other than the weather.
Fire Danger Ratings and Fire Weather Warnings are normally issued in the afternoon, for the following day, so that they are available in time for the evening television and radio news services. However, they may be issued at any time the need is recognised.
