Northern Australia Regional Outlook Conference Held In Darwin

The commodity outlook and financial performance of key agricultural industries across northern Australia will be released at the Northern Australia Regional Outlook conference in Darwin on Wednesday 4 November.

Delegates will hear about the economic and agricultural profile of the region, including that beef cattle production accounted for 37 per cent, or $1.57 billion of the $4.26 billion total value of agricultural production in 2006-07 – the latest year for which such data are available.

For fruit and vegetable production in Northern Australia, vegetables accounted for nearly 8 per cent ($334 million) of the total value of agricultural production in 2006-07. Mangoes, which are mostly produced in northern Queensland, accounted for almost 3 per cent ($124 million) and other fruit a further 2 per cent ($94 million) in 2006-07.

The conference, the only one in the Northern Territory in 2009, features presentations from 12 speakers and is open to everyone to discover more about their region, hear innovative business stories, make new contacts and discuss industry trends.

The conference will be opened by the Hon. Gary Gray AO, MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Western and Northern Australia.

The first session – The big picture: an economic overview – opens at 9am with introductory comments from Minister for Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources NT, the Hon. Kon Vatskalis, followed by Parliamentary Secretary for Western and Northern Australia, the Hon. Gary Gray AO, MP who will open the conference. Dr Terry Sheales of ABARE will explore the Economic issues affecting the region, followed by Megha Raut from the Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources NT with the Outlook for the Northern Territory economy and industry.

The second session – Building sustainable agriculture – includes Alan Copeland, ABARE, on the Outlook for mining and pastoral industries; Michael Finucan from Meat and Livestock Australia on Live cattle trade: present and future; and concludes with Rohan Sullivan from the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association on Advancing northern cattle operations.

Climate change: critical factors is the third session, with ABARE’s Catherine Tulloh discussing Agriculture: moving toward emissions trading; the Bureau of Meteorology’s Todd Smith on Northern Australia: a changing climate; and Joe Morrison, North Australian Indigenous Land & Sea Management Alliance, with Indigenous innovation in climate change.

The conference concludes with Succeeding in the region. Speakers include Richard Cresswell from CSIRO on Assessing water availability in Northern Australia; Kane and Marie Younghusband, Roper River Agriculture, discussing Building agriculture in the Top End – a melon grower’s perspective; and Michael Nesbit of Darwin Port Corporation on Australia’s northern gateway: port and trade developments.
