The Premier, John Brumby, today invited young Victorian apprentices to join Labor in building the State’s next era of prosperity, pledging that 2000 Victorian apprentices would be employed every year for the next four years on the Government’s multi-billion-dollar building program.
Visiting apprentices at NMIT in Heidelberg with Education and Skills Minister Bronwyn Pike and Eltham Labor MP Steve Herbert, Mr Brumby said a future Labor Government would invest more than $4.5 billion a year in building new infrastructure (rail, roads, schools, hospitals) and in keeping the jobs coming to Victoria.
“I want the next generation of young Victorians to join me in building the next era of prosperity for our great State,” Mr Brumby said.
“We want to keep the jobs coming to Victoria – and backing our Victorian apprentices is crucial to keeping the jobs coming to Victoria. Our Government has 172,000 training places coming on stream, to teach real skills for real jobs.
“Today I can announce that a future Labor Government will employ 2000 Victorian apprentices each year on our record infrastructure program.
“This next generation of Victorian apprentices will build their skills and a legacy for the State – building projects like the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Regional Rail Link, new schools, Peninsula Link, the Bendigo and Box Hill hospitals and the Monash Children’s Centre.”
Key projects the next generation of Victorian apprentices will work on also include:
Mr Brumby said a future Labor Government would deliver a Jobs Building Guarantee of 10 per cent of employees on large government projects being apprentices.
“Our record infrastructure program will generate on average 20,000 jobs each year for the next four years,” Mr Brumby said.
“By delivering on our Jobs Building Guarantee, a future Labor Government will ensure that each year 2000 apprentices will work on government projects each year for the next four years.
“Today’s commitment comes on top of our $23.8 million plan to support 4000 more apprentices to complete their training over the next four years.
“Victoria is the jobs capital of Australia. More than 100,000 jobs were created in Victoria in the last financial year, as the world emerged from the Global Financial Crisis.”
Mr Brumby said the $23.8 million plan for apprentices included:
“We are focused on bringing new jobs to Victoria, that’s why we have pledged to secure an additional 300,000 jobs over the next five years,” Mr Brumby said.
“We will cut payroll tax by more than $200 million to its lowest rate in 36 years, to reduce the cost of employing Victorians.
“And we will drive new housing construction by abolishing stamp duty on newly built first homes in regional Victoria, at a cost of $115.4 million; and continuing Australia’s most generous First Home Owner’s scheme next financial year, at a cost of $138.7 million.”
