Gaming Minister Tony Robinson today announced the Victorian Commission on Gambling Regulation (VCGR) will undertake an urgent review of current approvals for betting on cricket matches involving the Pakistan cricket team.

Mr Robinson said he requested the VCGR complete the review to determine whether betting should still be permitted on matches played by Pakistan.

“I regret that this action needs to be taken, but the Government has a clear responsibility to ensure sporting events which Victorians can bet on are conducted fairly,” he said.

“Recent allegations about the Pakistan cricket team mean we can no longer draw that conclusion.

“Because of these disturbing claims, it is necessary to for Victoria’s gambling regulator to confirm that continuing to allow Victorian betting providers to offer betting on any cricket match that involves Pakistan is fair and appropriate.”

In Victoria, the VCGR has to approve sports games and matches before betting is permitted.

Currently, the VCGR’s approval for cricket covers any ‘matches controlled and regulated by national or international authorities’.

The VCGR has the power to impose conditions on an approval at any time.

Mr Robinson has also written to Gaming Ministers across Australia calling on them to undertake similar reviews of betting on cricket matches involving Pakistan to ensure a uniform national approach to this issue.

Mr Robinson’s request for a review of the cricket betting arrangements in Victoria is confined to matches involving Pakistan and does not extend to betting on matches played by national and other international teams.
