A future Brumby Labor Government will invest $3.5 million for traffic lights and other important safety upgrades to replace the roundabout at the intersection of Mount Dandenong Road, Leith Road and Montrose Road in Montrose.

Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas was joined by the Member for Monbulk, James Merlino, and the Labor candidate for Kilsyth, Vicki Setches, today to make the funding announcement.

Mr Pallas said Labor was committed to providing families and businesses in the outer eastern suburbs with better roads for the future.

“We understand Victorians are concerned about road safety and want quicker, safer and easier travel – which is why we’re committed to building a world-class road network,” Mr Pallas said.

“A future Brumby Labor Government will invest $3.5 million to upgrade safety, ease congestion and improve traffic flow by replacing the roundabout at the increasingly busy intersection of Mount Dandenong Road, Leith Road and Montrose Road.

“This would include removing the roundabout and introducing new traffic lights at the intersection and safety treatments to improve pedestrian safety.

“This would be a great outcome for people living, working and visiting this beautiful area, with the upgrade to provide an important safety boost, while improving traffic movements.”

Mr Merlino said the major intersection upgrade was a great outcome for the local community, which had raised concerns about safety and congestion.

“This commitment will help reduce the significant delays during peak hour traffic, while preventing some of the near-misses and dangerous driving that occurs at the roundabout,” Mr Merlino said.

“It has been an important local issue, so Labor’s fully-costed funding announcement is particularly welcome, compared to the grossly under-funded and uncosted effort from the Opposition.”

Ms Setches said the significant safety upgrade was in line with the Brumby Labor Government’s arrive alive road safety strategy, which aims to reduce death and serious injuries on Victorian roads by 30 per cent.

“Labor is committed to building a better transport network for Victoria, providing important upgrades for our local communities, so people can spend more time with family and less time in traffic,” Ms Setches said.

The Victorian Labor Government has invested more than $8.4 billion into the Victorian road network, including $360 million for more than 1000 road safety projects in our suburbs.
