The Brumby Labor Government has cleared the path for the development of a $286 million homemaker centre development on Princes Highway, Springvale.
Planning Minister Justin Madden visited the site today to announce the fast-tracking of plans to increase the number of tenancies in the centre, creating the largest restricted retail precinct in Australia.
IKEA and Harvey Norman are to move into the centre, which is set to commence construction shortly.
“The Brumby Labor Government is standing up for Victorian families by speeding up the planning process to create jobs, manage growth and help families secure their lifestyle,’’ Mr Madden said.
“There continues to be a high level of investment in Victoria despite the challenges facing the international economy – we are building for the future to secure jobs.
“Our efforts to fast-track proposals are just one reason why we are currently weathering the impact of the global financial crisis better than almost anywhere in the world.’’
“The increased tenancies will provide greater shopping choice in the 72,000 square metre development, which will house a number of homemaker type stores,’’ Mr Madden said.
“The development will provide local job opportunities and greater choice for the community.’’
Mr Madden said the planning scheme amendment will help ensure the ongoing viability of the homemaker centre development providing a significant boost to the retail industry in Victoria.
“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to protect and strengthen the local economy during these tough economic times,’’ he said.
“Securing this retail development is a major boost to the Victorian economy and provides for future employment options in south east Melbourne.
“Melbourne is projected to grow by 1.26 million people over the next 20 years, so it’s vital that we have the jobs, services and local amenities to support the community.’’
