Sports clubs in Torquay and across the Bellarine Peninsula are set to benefit from a $400,000 funding boost for a new synthetic pitch at the new Torquay Civic precinct.

In Torquay today, the Premier John Brumby and Member for South Barwon Michael Crutchfield today announced that the Victorian Government would contribute to the project which would involve installation of a new drought-proof synthetic pitch and competition standard lighting.

“Local sporting clubs are at the heart of our communities and by improving the quality of their facilities, we’re encouraging even more people to get healthy and active,” Mr Brumby said.

“This new multi-purpose training facility will provide the community with a new and innovative training and competition facility for all sports users throughout the region.

“The proposed new synthetic surface pitch will be a low-maintenance, drought-proof alternative to the Surf Coast Soccer club’s existing natural grass pitch and will be able to withstand more wear and tear.”

Mr Brumby said the all-weather pitch would also cater for the growing popularity of soccer in the area, particularly amongst local female players, and allow local sports clubs and schools to host training and competitions, day or night.

“With so many locals wanting to get involved, it’s important we provide durable facilities that allow more people to play,” Mr Brumby said.

“The precinct will be a great asset for a community that is growing exponentially as more and more families make the move to the Surf Coast – it will have two AFL-sized senior footy grounds, soccer pitches and netball and basketball courts.”

Mr Crutchfield said the Brumby Labor Government would provide $300,000 towards the construction of a new pitch for the Surfcoast Football Club, while an additional $100,000 would also be provided for the installation of competition lighting.

“The new civic precinct is something that council has long planned, and it is soon to come to fruition – it will be a recreational precinct that will do the Surf Coast proud,” Mr Crutchfield said.

“This boost is great news for the soccer club and our funding continues to provide more opportunities for local people to get active and involved in sport and recreation through the development and upgrading of local sporting facilities.”

The funding is part of a $5.7 million Strengthening the World Game Program and the Synthetic Surfaces Program.

“Working together we can ensure local grounds can continue to be a focal point not just for the development of grassroots sports, but also provide a range of opportunities for the whole community,” Mr Crutchfield said.
