The first-stage of the Grampians Peak Trail will generate more tourism and jobs thanks to $1.3 million in support from the Brumby Labor Government.

Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan today announced that the Government would contribute $1.3 million towards the $1.6 million project to position it to become one of Victoria’s leading nature-based tourism attractions.

She said Parks Victoria would contribute a further $300,000.

“The Brumby Labor Government is partnering with Parks Victoria to deliver the $1.6 million first stage of Grampians Peak Trail,” Ms Allan said.

“The first stage will create a three-day and two-night looping track, taking trekkers from Halls Gap to Rosea Hikers Campsite and Burrough Huts and back to Halls Gap.

“It will become part of the broader, 14-day trek that will become one of four Victorian Wild Walks, walking trails that will help establish Victoria as Australia’s premier destination for nature based tourism.”

The first stage involves:

  • Detailed track design and signage;
  • 3.5 kilometre of track work from Halls Gap to Rosea Hikers Campsite;
  • Construction of new camp, including new group/school camp at Rosea Hikers Camp;
  • Construction of footbridge at Fyans Creek; and
  • 10 kilometre track upgrade between Rosea Hikers Camp and Borough Huts Hikers Camp.

Ms Allan said the trail would provide economic benefits to surrounding businesses in the region.

“Even the first stage will increase visitors to the region and provide more money for local businesses and more jobs for local people,” she said.

“And a feasibility study by Parks Victoria shows that, once complete, full trail will help grow the Grampians region’s economy by $8 million by 2014.”

Ms Allan said the Brumby Labor Government would contribute $1.3 million from its Regional Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), and Parks Victoria would contribute $300,000.

“The RIDF has committed more than $600 million to more than 389 vital infrastructure projects worth more than $1.6 billion in regional and rural Victoria,” she said

“We have announced that we will be topping-up the RIDF from 1 July by $260 million, as part of our $631 million Ready for Tomorrow: A Blueprint for Regional and Rural Victoria package, which aims to usher in a new era of prosperity and opportunity in our regions.”
