Victorians will now be able to take advantage of discounts for a wider range of energy efficient products including high efficiency televisions and ducted evaporative coolers as new incentives are added to the State’s innovative Energy Saver Incentive (ESI) scheme this week.

Making the announcement today, Minister for Energy and Resources Peter Batchelor said the new products would help households access discounts to replace energy guzzling products.

“ESI is already delivering meaningful reductions to the State’s greenhouse gas emissions and helping households to save money on their energy bill,” he said.

“More than 650,000 households have already participated in the Energy Saver Incentive scheme, taking advantage of incentives to install energy efficient lighting, shower heads, heating and hot water systems, receiving products free or at discounted rates under the scheme.

“These additional products will offer more opportunities for Victorians to reduce their household emissions and their energy bills.”

The new products and services being added to the Energy Saver Incentive scheme include:

  • Replacement of existing refrigerative air-conditioners with ducted evaporative coolers;
  • Installation of high efficiency ducted gas heaters in new homes;
  • Purchase of high efficiency televisions;
  • New categories for energy efficient lighting products;
  • Purchase of energy-efficient clothes dryers; and
  • Installation of high efficiency pool pumps.

Under ESI energy retailers are required to meet targets to help their customers improve their energy efficiency.

Companies can register to create certificates for every tonne of greenhouse gas emissions they help reduce from a home and the energy retailers then buy these certificates to meet their target.

“There are already almost 80 companies registered to participate in the scheme and we expect with these new products, more companies will register so they can pass on discounts to their customers,” Mr Batchelor said.

“Along with reducing household energy bills and emissions, ESI has also helped create 1200 jobs with green businesses.”

Alongside the new discounts, the Government also today released an issues paper setting the scene for a planned doubling of the State’s energy efficiency target, to be achieved by expanding the Energy Saver Incentive scheme.

Mr Batchelor said the expansion of the scheme was a commitment under the Government’s Climate Change White Paper Action Plan and would see the ESI emission reduction target jump to 5.4 million tonnes and the scheme extended to small and medium sized businesses.

“Doubling the energy efficiency target and including businesses in the scheme will deliver even bigger benefits for the environment, the economy and for household budgets,” he said.
