The addition of 40 new car parks at Kilmore East station will make train travel much easier for commuters in Kilmore, Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula said today.
Mr Pakula visited the station to inspect improvements in and around the station that have increased the number of car parks to 116.
“The Kilmore East Station Gateway project will help improve access to the station for the town’s growing population,” Mr Pakula said.
“Seymour line patronage has grown by more than 23 per cent in the past five years so with more people choosing to travel to Melbourne on the train, we want to make life easier for people to get to and from the station.”
The Kilmore East Station Gateway project involved:
Member for Seymour Ben Hardman said the upgrade – delivered with the help of a $225,000 Brumby Labor Government grant – was fantastic news for local commuters who combined a car and train journey to get to and from Melbourne and other locations on the Seymour line.
“With growing patronage on regional public transport, the Brumby Government is investing in new trains and buses along with improvements to stations and bus routes,” Mr Hardman said.
“V/Line rail patronage in the five years to 2009/10 increased by 97.8 per cent and now more than 1 million trips are made on the regional rail network each month.
“We have ordered 134 VLocity carriages for the regional rail network, with 110 in service and all carriages to be rolled-out by October 2011, adding an extra 9760 seats and almost doubling the number of seats on the network in 1999.”
Mr Pakula said the Brumby Government had introduced a number of public transport improvements in the Mitchell and Murrindindi shires this year.
“Last week I announced the introduction of trial bus services – from Hazeldene and Flowerdale to Kinglake West, from Yea to Yarra Glen via Glenburn, Castella and Toolangi, and Yea to Healesville via Glenburn, Castella and Toolangi – that will improve transport options for people living in Murrindindi,” Mr Pakula said.
“In April we upgraded Seymour town bus services, with an additional 141 trips per week, extended service coverage in the north of the town, new connections to V/Line services and longer operating hours.
“We also upgraded the Kilmore Town (Train/Connector) bus services with an additional 15 trips per week and extended route coverage to include a growing residential development area.
“And in conjunction with Mitchell Shire Council we are upgrading 78 bus stops in Seymour, Kilmore and Wallan to meet comply with DDA standards.”
