Twenty-seven businesses and organisations from across Victoria have been formally recognised for their progressive workplace practices and family friendly working conditions as part of the Brumby Labor Government’s Fair and Flexible Employer Recognition Awards.

Industrial Relations Minister Martin Pakula said the Employer Recognition and Awards initiative, now in its second year, showcases the many Victorian businesses and organisations that are working with their employees to boost workplace efficiency while maintaining flexibility for working families.

“Business is increasingly embracing workplace flexibility – it makes sense not just for employees and their families, but is vital to healthy organisations’ productivity and retention of skilled staff,” Mr Pakula said.

“Fair and flexible working arrangements benefit staff, employers and businesses because they help staff manage their work and family balance and help businesses attract and retain the best people.

“Of the 27 recipients, 20 organisations have received commendation awards for providing an innovative range of flexible programs and policies in their workplaces. A further seven organisations have been recognised for their commitment to family friendly workplace practices.”

Commendation awards were given to: ACER, Baker and McKenzie, Benetas, the Building Commission, City of Melbourne, Civic Home Timber and Hardware Colac, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Country Road, DASSI, Hobsons Bay City Council, IBM Australia, KPMG, Maddocks, Manningham City Council, Maribyrnong City Council, Mercy Health, Villa Maria, Vision Australia, Western Region Health Centre and Yarra Ranges Shire Council.

The further seven organisations recognised for their work are: Child and Family Services Ballarat, ConnectEast, Dairy Food Safety Victoria, Maroondah Halfway House, Monash University, Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency, and the YMCA.

“Across these organisations, there is a broad suite of initiatives, which include flexible leave packages, paid and unpaid parental leave, pre-natal leave for medical appointments, maternity, paternity and adoption leave, carer’s leave, leave without pay and religious, ceremonial and cultural leave,” Mr Pakula said.

“The Brumby Labor Government is committed to promoting policies and encouraging practices that make life easier for working families and more productive for business.

“That’s why we set up the Working Families Council in August 2007, which acts to promote corporate role models who have successfully introduced initiatives to assist working families, and they have chosen wisely with our new group of award winners.”
