The Town of Star City is moving forward with upgrades to the local arena thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Today, Randy Hoback, Member of Parliament for Prince Albert, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for arena upgrades that will create jobs for Star City.

“The upgrades to Star City’s arena will ensure our community has access to the essential recreational facilities we need today, and in the future,” said MP Hoback.

Funding of $100,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Upgrades to the arena include installation of geothermal technology and rubberized flooring. Geothermal technology will substantially reduce operating costs and ensure that the ice surface maintains a cool enough temperature to add 8 to 10 weeks to the hockey and skating season each year.

Rubberized flooring will enhance safety for all users of the arena.

“The federal government’s announcement of funding for an innovative project will enhance our community,” said Barry Petrie, Mayor of Star City. “The installation of a geothermal system in our arena will extend our winter usage season, providing more opportunity for our youth and those in our surrounding communities. As our economy moves forward in the northeast of Saskatchewan, families will be drawn to our town.”

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
