Screen Australia is pleased to present The High Concept Movie Workshop, a new development initiative designed for screenwriters who are committed to writing a high concept movie.

Under the personal guidance of renowned screenwriting consultant, Michael Hauge, writers will develop their high concept movie idea into a fully structured treatment and learn what it takes to get their idea to stand out and make it to the big screen in a highly competitive market.

Normally the domain of Hollywood, a high concept movie has a clear, identifiable hook and sits within a recognizable genre.

Its story concept can pull audiences into the theater with the expectation of a powerfully emotional and entertaining experience.

Examples include Jaws, Speed and The Hangover.

The High Concept Movie Workshop aims to support the development of writers whose natural affinity is with this kind of movie and to encourage them to be original, rigorous with their craft and ambitious in their aspirations.

Michael Hauge is a highly regarded Hollywood script consultant, and the best-selling author of Writing Screenplays That Sell and Selling Your Story in 60 Seconds.

He has consulted on projects starring Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, Kirsten Dunst, Robert Downey, Jr. and Morgan Freeman.

He is currently on retainer with Will Smith’s company, Overbrook Entertainment, where he was involved in the development of I Am Legend, Hancock and The Karate Kid.

Michael has presented seminars and lectures to more than 50,000 participants throughout the world.

Beginning with a public lecture followed by a closed three-day workshop, writers will be selected based on the strength of three submitted ideas.

Selected writers will then choose one idea to expand into an outline guided by Hauge using his six-stage approach to story structure.

The workshop will culminate with each writer having an outline from which a post-workshop treatment will be created.

A personal follow-up consultation session with Michael Hauge via phone or Skype will be provided, overseen by a Screen Australia Development Manager.

“Diversity is the key to a rich and sustainable Australian film industry,” said Martha Coleman, Head of Development at Screen Australia. “This workshop aims to encourage a particular kind of commercial movie thinking. Michael Hauge’s insight and skill will provide invaluable guidance to writers specifically aiming to work in a traditionally Hollywood dominated area, adding to Screen Australia’s support for all kinds of big screen storytelling.”

Experienced feature length screenwriters are invited to apply for this nationally offered workshop to be held in Sydney.

A public lecture entitled Michael Hauge – From High Concept to Pitch will be held on the evening of Monday 14 March 2011, followed by the closed three-day workshop from 15–17 March 2011.
