B.C. employers will be able to design, develop and deliver employee training that meets the unique needs of their business through the new $15 million Workplace Training for Innovation pilot, Moira Stillwell, Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development announced today.

“We’re creating new options for B.C. employers to help them boost employee productivity and give them the skills they need to lead our economic recovery,” said Stilwell. “Today, we are launching the first of several initiatives to support our businesses and the important jobs they provide.”

This provincial initiative, funded through the federal Strategic Training and Transition Fund (STTF), supports B.C.’s economic recovery by increasing the abilities of employees and employers. Ways in which this training could benefit B.C. employers may include:

- Providing workers with training in new technologies, equipment and work processes.

- Enhancing international competitiveness.

- Introducing innovative training and workplace strategies to increase the long term success of the organization and its workforce.

- Improving productivity.

- Assisting small and mid-sized business and non-profit organizations that may not otherwise have training resources.

“In these tough economic times our Government is helping Canadians improve their skills so they can get the jobs of tomorrow,” said the Honourable Diane Finley, the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. “That is why our Government is pleased to work with the B.C. Government to support this pilot to enhance employee training.”

The request for proposals (RFP) posted to BC Bid seeks a qualified service provider who will evaluate and manage applications and disburse funding for the pilot. Once a successful service partner has been selected, employers across the province will be able to apply for funding for skills and training initiatives.

The two-year STTF pilot supports provincial initiatives that help workers improve their skills, helping them retain employment in communities and sectors affected by the economic downturn, and assisting unemployed workers transition to new jobs. British Columbia will receive approximately $25.6 million each year from the Government of Canada to assist individuals affected by the downturn to participate in the training or other employment initiatives that they need.
