Nearly one billion litres of water will be saved each year for local communities across Victoria, through the roll-out of three new water saving infrastructure projects.
Water saved will ease the demand on local drinking water supplies in Phillip Island, Sunbury and south-west Victorian communities.
The projects will also deliver improved water security for residents and businesses in these communities.
Hume City Council, Wannon Water and Westernport Region Water Corporation will share in more than $3.7 million in Federal Government funding, with projects due to start later this year.
In Sunbury today, Minister for Water Senator Penny Wong said the projects will ensure a vibrant future for local communities.
“The emerging effects of climate change and varying population patterns mean communities across Australia face increasing pressure in securing their water supplies,” Senator Wong said.
“It’s vital that we support local communities and businesses in tackling the challenge of a future with less water.
“We need to find new sources of water for urban supplies that are less dependent on rain-fed sources, while helping communities use water more wisely.
“That’s why the Rudd Government is investing over $1 billion in desalination, water recycling and stormwater.”
Projects that will be rolled out include:
Projects have been funded from the National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns program, an initiative of the Federal Government’s long-term Water for the Future program.
The National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns program supports communities with fewer than 50,000 people implement practical water saving infrastructure.
