The Gillard Government is urging Australian consumers to support tomato growers in Bowen by continuing to purchase Australian produce.

Farmers and landholders in the Bowen area produce some of Australia’s best fruit and vegetables including tomatoes, capsicums, melons and eggplants.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke was shocked by the sabotage which targeted a local seedling nursery.

“I’ve previously met with growers in Bowen, it is a strong and resilient community that produces some of Australia’s best fruit and vegetables.

“This sabotage has been estimated as potentially costing the industry and the wider community up to $50 million.

“In communities like Bowen, farmers and growers are central to the local economy by employing local workers and purchasing products from local businesses.”

Mr Burke urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au.

“Anyone with any information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, you can do this anonymously and any information could help the police investigation.”

Mr Burke also urged all Australians to support Australian farmers during this difficult time.

“This crime will possibly mean increased prices for tomatoes and other fruit or vegetables.

“However, it is critical that Australian consumers support these farmers the best way they can – by buying Australian produce.

“Australian grown fruit and vegetables are clearly marked, they taste great and will help the industry during this tough time.”
