A Sunshine-based child car safety product manufacturer has received support from the Brumby Labor Government to continue making its innovative life-saving harnesses in Victoria.

Visiting Britax Childcare’s harness manufacturing facility today, Industry and Trade Minister Jacinta Allan said the company could now upgrade its harness manufacturing facility, which employs 22 people, to allow it to better compete against global competitors and secure local jobs.

“Britax’s Safe-n-Sound range of child car safety harnesses have been designed and manufactured locally since 1969,” Ms Allan said.

“In order to compete with overseas providers, we understand Britax must continue to improve its processes, and improve its products to retain its well-deserved reputation as a market leader.

“That’s why our Government is helping Britax rise to the challenge with support from our Industry Transition Fund (ITF).”

Ms Allan said the upgrade would help Britax to more competitively price its safety harnesses while continuing manufacturing operations in Sunshine.

“The company can continue to save Victorian lives on the road in this, the 40th year since our State being the first jurisdiction in the world to make wearing seatbelts compulsory,” she said.

Ms Allan said the Brumby Labor Government would continue to support the Victorian automotive manufacturing industry, its supply chain, and its 30,000 jobs.

“Britax is one of the last companies to receive support under our ITF which was set-up to help companies through the worst of the global financial crisis,” Ms Allan said.

“The ITF has helped facilitate $223 million of business investment, created 639 new jobs and helped retain 3215 jobs.

“Over its life the ITF helped 23 businesses, nine of which are located in regional Victoria.

“That fund has been replaced by the new Competitive Business Fund which will help Victorian manufacturers create innovative new products to capture new markets both locally and overseas.”
