Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Agriculture) Jean Pierre Blackburn announced today that the Government of Canada will contribute over $760,000 to the Fédération des producteurs acéricoles du Québec (FPAQ).
An amount of $595,000 will allow the FPAQ to implement its long term marketing strategy, and $168,583 to carry out two studies to determine the attributes and health benefits of maple.
“The Fédération des producteurs acéricoles du Québec works actively to improve the competitiveness of maple products on both domestic and international markets in order to support this industry’s long term growth,” said Minister Blackburn. “Recent years have been difficult for maple syrup producers, and our government has not let those producers down.”
The marketing strategy is designed to promote value added maple products with international consumers, and to highlight the numerous uses of maple in food and other sectors because of its health benefits. The FPAQ intends to double the value of maple product sales by the year 2020.
Minister Blackburn was also pleased with the funds to help finance the two studies. The first study is designed to determine the nutraprevention and nutrition therapy effects of maple syrup while the second will verify the health effects of a maple drink. The purpose of these studies is to identify new value added features that will expand maple syrup marketing opportunities.
The funding granted to carry out the two studies comes from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s adaptation program managed by the Conseil pour le développement de l’agriculture du Québec (CDAQ).
Funding for the FPAQ’s marketing strategy comes from the AgriMarketing program. The AgriMarketing program, with an $88 million budget over four years, is assisting producers and processors to increase exports of Canada’s safe, high-quality world-class products around the world. The Program provides funding to develop and implement long term international strategy and undertake activities such as international market development, brand building and industry-to-industry trade advocacy. Launched on April 7, 2009, the AgriMarketing program is part of the Market and Trade Development program under Growing Forward.
